The purpose of the Advanced Certificate in Literacy Program is to cultivate professional educators who serve as critical practitioners of literacy. The program provides its teacher candidates with a theoretical and practical foundation in 21st-century literacy, addressing research and science-based literacy approaches and strategies, traditional as well as nontraditional forms of literacy, and multicultural perspectives. Teacher candidates will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to be effective classroom or reading teachers, working with students of diverse backgrounds and of different reading abilities across all grades. The teacher candidates will also develop competencies to work with other teachers, school administrators, and community stakeholders, including parents, to support student learning.

NOTE: Effective Fall 2024, we will no longer be accepting students for the current program.
The 15-credit Advanced Certificate in Teaching Literacy, Birth–Grade 6, will permit qualified applicants, who have a master’s degree and hold a teaching certificate in another teaching area to earn initial or professional certification in Teaching Literacy, Birth–Grade 6. This certificate requires completion of the five courses listed below, completion of Content Specialty Test in Literacy, and completion of 50 hours of practical experience in EDUC 659, which serves as the capstone for this program. Applicants to this program must also include a copy of the initial certificate with their application materials.

NOTE: Starting Fall 2025, we are accepting students into our new Teaching Students with Disabilities All Grades, Advanced Certificate program. The previous program, Teaching Students with Disabilities Early Childhood and Childhood Advanced Certificate, is no longer available.
The 15-credit Advanced Certificate in Teaching Students with Disabilities Early Childhood or Childhood is for qualified applicants who have a Master’s degree and who hold a NYSED teacher certificate who are seeking to add a SWD certification.
